Winners announced in KFAS headquarters design competition (Kuwait)

Topotek 1 (Switzerland/Germany) has been officially announced as the winner of the international competition for the design of the new headquarters of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences  (KFAS).The competition was organised as an international, restricted two-phase architecture competition preceded by an open pre-selection procedure. Its objective was to design the new KFAS headquarters and conference centre as part of a master plan aiming to develop an attractive location for science in Ras-Al Ard area, the northeastern tip of the Salmiyan peninsula in Kuwait.

Speaking during the presentation, the winning team, led by Dan Budik and Martin Rein-Cano, described its design explaining that the “concept for the KFAS site envisions an inviting green public space along the harbour that merges seamlessly with the existing coastal promenade and – like an elegant necklace that accentuates sparkling jewels – connects two striking new landmarks to the KFAS Science Centre, further enriching Kuwait’s exciting architectural landscape.”
The jury praised the winning design “as a courageous, consistent contribution whose conceptual and structural approach delivers the implementation of all functional requirements and sensitivity towards a traditional context.”
Subsequent prizes were awarded as follows:
2nd prize: Metaform architects (Luxembourg)
3rd prize: Querkraft architekten zt gmbh (Austria)
4th prize: Nasrine Seraji Architect (France), with Petitdidierprioux Architects (France), VS-A (Hong Kong, China), and Djao-Rakitine LTD (United Kingdom)
The competition  was organised by KFAS and managed by German agency [phase eins]. It was launched on 26 March 2018 with the endorsement of the UIA, which was represented on the jury by Italian architect Luca Molinari.
